Recognizing All Relationships Equally • Today, same-sex couples and their children can be denied the right to visit a sick or injured loved one in the hospital and they receive no Social Security survivor benefits despite paying payroll taxes. Same-sex couples should receive the same legal rights and protections that other couples receive. Senator Feingold was one of only fourteen Senators to vote against the anti-gay 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. He is also the leading voice in the United States Senate fighting to stop the Marriage Protection Amendment. On April 2, 2006 Senator Feingold announced is support for marriage equality for same-sex couples. Fighting Job Discrimination• Currently, no federal law protects people from being fired, refused work or otherwise discriminated against merely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Senator Feingold is a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Ending the Military Ban• GLBT Americans should be able to serve the country openly and honestly. We need a military that is trained, equipped and ready, and we should not waste hard-earned taxpayer dollars drumming out trained and dedicated service members. Senator Feingold opposed the Clinton Administration’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which still permits the military to dishonorably discharge a person due solely to sexual orientation. Senator Feingold voted for an amendment that would have ended this practice, as well as military investigations under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Responding to the HIV/AIDS Crisis• In the United States, nearly 110 men, women and children become infected every day with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. America and the world needs a comprehensive response to AIDS, with major resources devoted to research, prevention, treatment and support services for people with HIV/AIDS. Until a cure is found, prevention is the only weapon to stop the spread of the virus. Senator Feingold was a co-sponsor of the Early Treatment for HIV Act of 2003, which would expand Medicaid to people living with HIV and provide states with the option to cover low-income HIV-infected individuals as “categorically needy.” Fighting for Equity in Immigration Law• Senator Feingold was one of 13 co-sponsors of the Permanent Partners Immigration Act, which would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents the same immigration benefits legal spouses of U.S. residents enjoy.
